Applying for Medicaid
Administered through the Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS), Medicaid is a State program to assist in paying for long-term nursing care. Applying for Medicaid can be an overwhelming and difficult task. The facility Administrator will be happy to provide a blank application, explain the various forms, discuss all aspects of applying for Medicaid and advise you of additional items you will need to gather and send in with the Medicaid application.
The DHS has very strict guidelines, deadlines, etc. for the Medicaid program. Failure to comply with DHS’s requirements may result in denial or termination of Medicaid benefits. Therefore, it is very important to communicate with the facility Administrator to assure all rules, guidelines and deadlines are followed. It is also a good idea to have the facility Administrator review the completed Medicaid application, and supporting documents, prior to sending it to DHS to assure completeness. The facility Administrator can also fax the documents to DHS, at no charge, to assure DHS receives the documents quickly and to establish an early application date.
